Lone Star State Of Mind

Joni Mitchell if she found a guitar instead of an Applacchian Dulcimer.
This is an intricate and interesting record. It has a strong sense of place, and I felt like it had the gradual effect of transporting me there. Not in the way that you get listening to a Duran Duran record, say, where you recognise the sound and can think of an era. Rather, in some intangible way, I feel as if I’ve been guided on a journey there, with a cold winter wind, from a distance. It’s encapsulating. In a way, the album itself is a great metaphor for the analogue, and is perhaps among the most poignant examples of personality, not just place, in a record. It makes me long for somewhere I’ve never been and perhaps even sorrowful that it may only exist in an outsider’s dream.
