This was a pick from Towa Records' overhead speakers in Shibuya and it certainly suits doing something else while you listen. There's something earnest and free about the sound here and I do quite like it. Makes me want to try things I haven't done before, even when I'm knackered and don't want to. I don't know if it would get that same feeling if I'd heard it bright and early this morning. Again, not something to sit down and listen to, but being 32 and from Yokohama isn't about sitting still. Travel and see things; walk until your feet hurt. Try the coffee. Don't stay still or the world might spin you right off into space.
There's a certain melancholy I always find when I listen to Japanese Folk-Rock. The simplistic instrumentals combined with the wistful lyrics invoke the feeling of a lone walk along the Kamo River on a frosty morning. While maybe not as effective as the masterful Ichiko Aoba and perhaps risks losing itself with the addition of complicated instruments like drums, it still manages to coax some of that same feeling out of me.
I would say my overarching feeling throughout this album was curiosity. There was something interesting there and once again I think that my biggest frustration was the foreign language lyrics. The vocalist wasn’t particularly impressive as an instrumentalist, so I’m just not sure there’s much I can say to distinguish this record from the crowd.
