Breezin'
George Benson
1976
Felt like a lot of what I enjoyed in this album was how later musicians took the basics on display here and morphed it into their own thing. Another victim of being too influential for their own good. Also the version I listened to felt like it dragged (although I know the standard version is 3 songs shorter)
A journey of emotions with excellent guitar playing. An easy fast favourite. Happy to recognise Affirmation from Counting Stars by Nujabes. Breezin', This Masquerade, and especially Lady were the highlights for me.
This album is an excellent representation of something I’m starting to call the ‘Jazz Trap’. I really enjoyed the album. But was it definitively good and did it stand out from the rest (7), or am I hard pressed to find anything wrong with it but it didn’t stand out (6)? I can’t say I’m convinced but I lean towards a 7, mostly because I was so impressed by the intro track, but I was also impressed by the general pacing and mix of the record
